Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Japanning was a European finishing technique developed in the late 17th and 18th centuries to imitate East Asian lacquerwork. It involved applying multiple layers of resin-based varnishes over a primed wooden carcass, decorated with gilded chinoiserie motifs.

These cabinets were typically built with a softwood or oak carcass, coated in gesso and built-up layers of lacquer or varnish. Decorative elements used shellac, gold leaf, and metallic pigments, finished with cast brass hardware such as butterfly or H-hinges.

Authentic pieces display signs of natural age, including fine surface cracking (craquelure) in the lacquer, hand-planed timber surfaces on the reverse, hand-forged nails, and hand-cast brass fittings showing mild surface oxidisation.

A corner cabinet can be positioned to make use of underutilised wall corners in dining rooms, hallways, or living spaces. The dark lacquer and metallic highlights create visual contrast when set against neutral or deeply saturated wall paints.

Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, heat sources, and damp environments to prevent wood movement and lacquer flaking. Dust gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical polishes, wax, or water-based cleaners.
