A firing glass is a small, heavy-footed drinking vessel used during the 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly for toasts at Masonic lodges, political meetings, and banquets, where the thick base was banged on the table to produce a sharp sound resembling a musket volley.

These pieces were typically crafted from lead glass, also known as flint glass, which provided a heavy weight, high refractive index, and durability necessary for the frequent tapping on tables.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic pontil marks on the underside of the heavy, thickened foot, minor surface wear, and inherent manufacturing bubbles or striations within the glass body.

Displaying historic stemware within illuminated glass cabinets or on open shelving allows the light to refract through the clear lead crystal, adding historical texture to a modern room.

Antique glass should be washed strictly by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and harsh abrasive sponges to protect the fragile historic surface.
