An extremely interesting and attractive press cupboard in oak. Of small proportion with excellent carved central panel of extraordinary foliate design, the two top doors have carved diamonds and there are strap work carvings between them and to the top rail of each half of the cupboard. The bottom doors have very decorative quarter sawn panels which show the medullary rays to great effect. The balusters are of very generous, almost bulbous proportion and extremely well turned. The cupboard is in good condition with authentic surface and patina. Some bottom boards have been replaced with pine at some point in its history and the top doors have nineteenth century locks fitted, the keys are present for these locks. The cupboard is in two parts.
This cupboard comes from a small group of furniture that have been traced to a workshop operating in the county of Durham in the mid seventeenth to the early eighteenth century. Most of the examples found have been chairs and cupboards, with, t...o date one chest. Ongoing study is in progress and I have included a link below to cut and paste to your browser to read an extensive article in The Regional Furniture Society journal about these pieces.
