Martin Murray Antiques has dated this piece to the 17th Century.
The balusters are of very generous, almost bulbous proportion and extremely well turned. The cupboard is in good condition with authentic surface and patina. Some bottom boards have been replaced with pine at some point in its history and the top doors have nineteenth century locks fitted, the keys are present for these locks. The cupboard is in two parts.
This cupboard comes from a small group of furniture that have been traced to a workshop operating in the county of Durham in the mid seventeenth to the early eighteenth century. Most of the examples found have been chairs and cupboards, with, to date one chest. Ongoing study is in progress and I have included a link below to cut and paste to your browser to read an extensive article in The Regional Furniture Society journal about these pieces.
