The case is stamp ‘JUST’ and was part of a limited number of clocks being produced Hour Lavigne in France with this trademark at the top end of the company’s production, this clock dates from the late 1940’s- early 1950’s.

Hour Lavigne and "JUST" clocks

Charles Victor HOUR, one of the co-founders of HOUR LAVIGNE which still produces some of the finest and most spectacular clocks today (Google Hour Lavigne) began as an apprentice at 11 years of age. Twenty years later, he bought out a failing manufacture and in 1891 took on an associate - Diette. Together they became one of the most important clock makers in France.

Hour then associated himself with Maurice Lavigne and by the end of the XIX C, Hour Lavigne was the largest clock and timepiece manufacturer in France with over 800 employees.

The company also manufactured clocks that were stamped with the brand name of some of the most prestigious jewellers such as Tiffany & Co. High-end jewelers in both America and in the U.K. did not normally manufacture the clocks they sold under their names, but sought out prestigious clockmakers to produce models with their brands stamped on the dial and the maker's name or logo on the movement.

This clock is overhauled and ready to ship and comes with our two year guarantee.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A book-shaped desk clock is a horological novelty timepiece designed to mimic the appearance of a bound volume, often inspired by medieval illuminated manuscripts or religious Books of Hours.

These timepieces are typically constructed using cast or stamped brass, often decorated with foliate engraving, and feature silvered metal chapter rings and steel hands.

Authentic period examples feature hand-engraved detailing, silvered brass dials showing natural surface oxidisation, and mechanical clock movements stamped with maker marks.

A brass book clock functions well on an office desk, styled within a dark wood bookshelf, or placed atop a mantelpiece alongside leather-bound volumes.

Dust the brass exterior gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polishes that can remove silvering or damage dark patination in the engraved grooves.
