Crystal manufacture in Scotland during the early twentieth century, particularly around Edinburgh and Leith, was characterised by traditional hand-cutting techniques and high lead content glass, reflecting a heritage of fine craftsmanship that supplied formal dining and entertaining markets.

These pieces are traditionally crafted from heavy lead crystal, shaped via glassblowing, and finished with intricate hand-cut geometric and floral motifs using abrasive wheels, followed by polishing to achieve high clarity.

Authentic pieces typically feature characteristic weight, subtle optical distortions or tiny air bubbles indicative of hand manufacture, crisp wheel-cut detailing, and occasionally acid-etched manufacturer signatures or registration marks from the period.

Vintage crystal adds texture and sparkle when displayed on a bar cart, incorporated into open cabinet shelving, or used functionally during formal dining events to contrast cleanly with minimalist modern tableware.

Antique crystal should be washed by hand in warm water using mild detergent with a microfibre cloth placed at the bottom of the sink to prevent chipping, avoiding sudden temperature changes and dishwashers entirely.
