A longcase clock, commonly known as a grandfather clock, is a tall, freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clock enclosed in a wooden case, typically featuring a hood enclosing the dial.

Longcase clocks are traditionally constructed using a hardwood carcass such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring brass dial faces, steel movements, and lead or cast-iron weights.

Authentic pieces are identified through hand-painted or engraved brass dials featuring makers signatures, hand-cut gear teeth, secondary woods matching the era, and signs of age-related wear on the movement.

A longcase clock acts as a striking architectural focal point in contemporary spaces, pairing well with minimalist walls or serving as a contrasting traditional element in a neutral hallway.

Preservation requires professional servicing every few years, keeping the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and ensuring it is positioned on a stable, level surface with vertical pendulum alignment.
