Chinoiserie is a European decorative art style that reflects Chinese artistic influences, characterised by hand-painted or lacquered motifs of landscapes, figures, and pagodas, frequently applied to furniture and clocks during the 18th and 20th centuries.

These clocks typically feature a wooden carcass finished with layers of black lacquer, hand-gilded or painted decorative scenes, and brass or gilt-metal mounts enclosing mechanical spring-driven movements.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of age in the lacquer, such as fine craquelure or oxidation, hand-engraved brass dials, high-quality mechanical movements by established makers, and traditional joinery rather than modern synthetic finishes.

A black lacquer clock serves as a striking focal point on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookshelf, contrasting well against neutral walls or adding depth and texture to traditional and eclectic room schemes.

Maintain stable humidity and temperature away from direct sunlight to prevent lacquer cracking and fading. Clean the surface gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and have the mechanical movement serviced professionally every few years.
