During the 19th century, particularly the Victorian and Belle Epoque eras, French glassmakers produced highly decorative scent bottles for the luxury vanity market. Enamelling techniques allowed artisans to paint intricate, colourful floral motifs directly onto the glass surface, creating highly sought-after boudoir accessories.

These pieces were typically crafted from blown or mould-pressed clear glass, featuring hand-ground glass stoppers to ensure an airtight seal for precious perfumes. Artisans applied vitreous enamel paints by hand, firing the glass at low temperatures to fuse the colourful pigments permanently to the exterior.

Authentic 19th-century scent bottles often display minor surface irregularities, tiny air bubbles within the glass, and hand-filed pontil marks on the base. The enamel work should exhibit slight raised relief due to the thickness of the vitreous paints, and the stopper must be individually ground to fit its specific neck.

Placing such decorative glassware on a mirrored tray, marble vanity counter, or floating shelf allows light to pass through the clear glass and highlight the vibrant enamel colours. It serves as a sophisticated focal point in a bedroom or bathroom, blending historical craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist surfaces.

To protect delicate hand-painted enamel and prevent historical glass degradation, pieces should be kept out of direct sunlight and dusted gently with a dry, soft microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or immersion, as moisture can damage the aged enamel pigments and compromise any residual internal residue.
