19th Century Tibetan Polychrome Painted Cabinet

Status: This item has been sold
Sold by: School House Antiques

A Tibetan polychrome hand-painted cabinet dating from the mid to late 19th century. It features eight beautifully painted panels with an extremely rare foo dogs and dragon design surrounded by leafy foliage. The cabinet has four pivoting central doors with a shelf, offering excellent storage.

Constructed from pinewood without the need for nails or screws, it is decorated in traditional vibrant Tibetan colours. These cabinets were often used as family altars and would have also been seen in temples, where they were used to store religious scrolls, silk ceremonial clothes, and family valuables. Original antique Tibetan cabinets are now very difficult to source, as there are many reproductions on the market.
