Description

A fabulous cut glass butter dish from the start of the Victorian period. This gorgeous example is of rounded form, with stunning cutting to the body and lid and saucer. The base is cut with a multi-point star and there is extensive and matching cut decoration to all parts, featuring hobnails and strawberry diamonds. The lid is removed via a matching cut knop. These fine pieces are good collector's items and rather difficult to find, particularly with all three component parts intact. A good example both practical and decorative. Dimensions below.

FAQs

Early Victorian cut glass is characterised by heavy lead crystal composition, deep wheel-cut geometric patterns, and brilliant optical clarity, reflecting the technological advancements and affluent domestic lifestyles of the mid-19th century.

These pieces were crafted from heavy flint glass, also known as lead crystal, shaped via moulds and finished by hand-cutting, polishing, and faceting on a revolving wheel to create intricate refractive patterns.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit high weight due to lead content, minor surface wear or scuffs on the base consistent with age, hand-polished pontil marks, and sharp, crisp facets rather than the smooth rounded edges of modern pressed glass.

This piece can be utilised as a reflective accent on a dining table centre, sideboard top, or open shelving, adding texture and historical contrast to contemporary minimalist or transitional spaces.

Wash by hand in lukewarm water using a mild, non-abrasive detergent and a soft cloth. Avoid extreme temperature fluctuations and dishwasher cycles to prevent thermal shock and preservation of the historic glass surface.
