Paul Garnier, Paris: A Series I Carriage Clock with Interesting 'Hidden' Signature

A most interesting carriage clock by Paul Garnier, Paris.

?Although unsigned on the dial or movement, the underside of the base is cast numerous times with the name Paul Garnier, Paris, showing this to be an example from the Garnier workshops.

?An engraved one-piece carriage clock signed on the dial for the retailer A. Demeur a Bruxells Her de la Cour. With trefoil hands and blue Roman hour numerals.

The typical Garnier eight-day duration movement strikes the hours and half-hours on a bell with an outside countwheel and is fitted with a chaff-cutter escapement. The backplate is stamped with the serial number 1719 which would date the clock to circa 1838/40.

?All the features of this clock, including the movement layout, dial markings, case style and engraving point to this being from the Garnier workshop.

?The casting to the base adds to the Garnier story in showing that not all clocks eminating from them were signed in an obvious manner, and many can be firmly attribute to Garnier.
