Description

Technical Description

An 19th-century Toastmaster Wine Glass dating to c1860.

A thick round funnel bowl, highly deceptive, above a plain stem and conical foot.

We've had a few 18th and 19th century toastmaster glasses over the years and they are rare enough in their own right, however a large example like this, obviously a wine rather than a dram, is very unusual and a very fine example.

A deceptive glass, commonly known as a toastmasters glass, features a thick solid interior base that creates the optical illusion of holding a full measure while containing only a fraction of liquid, historically used by hosts to remain sober during prolonged drinking toasts.

These pieces were typically hand-blown from lead glass or flint glass, characterised by heavy weights, thick walls, and polished pontil marks on the underside of the foot.

Authentic 19th-century examples display characteristic manufacturing traits such as minor surface inclusions, uneven hand-formed rims, wear scratches on the base, and the heavy tactile weight associated with period lead glass.

Displaying historical glassware within glass-fronted cabinets, open shelving, or as a curated tabletop object adds textural interest and a sense of historical narrative to contemporary spaces.

Antique glass should be washed strictly by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature changes and harsh abrasives to protect the delicate surface patina.
