Small Welsh Oak Two-part Cupboard, Cardiganshire, West Wales, Circa 1770

18th century
Description

This is a beautiful and superior example of a type known to collectors as a Carmarthen coffer, and must be the neatest one that I've encountered in fifty-five years of handling such pieces.

The top section has a polished surface above an inlaid frieze, over two doors each with a pair of gothic-shaped panels enclosing a shelved interior, over a base section with two small drawers flanked by a pair of larger drawers, the whole raised on bracket feet.

It has a wonderful lustrous colour and surface.

Cardiganshire (Ceredigion), circa 1770

(The handles and knobs are old replacements)

See "Welsh Furniture 1250-1950: A Cultural History of Craftsmanship and Design" for similar examples.

Height: 51.5 ins; 131 cms

Width: 49 ins; 124.5

Depth: 18 ins; 45.75 cms

Internal depth of top section: 15 ins; 38 cms

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
