Imari porcelain is a traditional style of Japanese export porcelain produced in the town of Arita and shipped from the port of Imari. It gained prominence during the Edo period, characterised by a distinctive palette of underglaze blue, iron red, and gold.

Imari pieces are crafted from high-fired porcelain clay, hand-painted with cobalt blue under the glaze, followed by overglaze enamel colours such as iron red and gold detailing, then fired multiple times in a kiln.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-painted brushwork with slight imperfections, a dense and heavy porcelain body, characteristic craquelure or wear to the overglaze enamels, and often feature underglaze blue maker marks on the base.

An antique Imari vase functions well as a focal point on a sideboard or mantelpiece, contrasting cleanly against neutral walls to highlight its rich cobalt and iron-red colour scheme.

Antique porcelain should be dusted gently with a soft, dry cloth. Washing should be avoided unless necessary, and if required, done by hand in lukewarm water with mild soap, avoiding harsh scrubbing or soaking to protect the overglaze gold.
