Georgian Gadrooned Baluster Mead Or Champagne Glass
Status:This item has been sold Sold by:The World is Made of Glass Ltd.
This is a scarce Georgian, English, baluster mead or champagne glass, dating from the early part of the 18th century, c1730. A similar glass can be seen in Bickerton''s ''18th Century English Drinking Glasses'' on plate 59 and in Delomosne''s ''The Baluster Family'' (1985), on p.55, no.26c. Whether these glasses were used for mead or not is disputable but the form is known as such so mead glass it is.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot consistent with some 300 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.
The glass has a cup-shaped bowl measuring 6.7 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is plain save for a ring of sixteen evenly spaced basal flutes or gadroons. The bowl sits on a baluster stem consisting of a teared mushroom knop above a short plain section terminating in a teared basal knop. The stem leads to a conical, folded foot which measures 7.5 cm (3 inches) ...in diameter. The glass is 12 cm (4.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious signs of restoration.
English lead glass weighing in at 195 g. (~ 7 oz.).
Provenance: the Bayreuth Collection. Bought at Phillips Auctioneers, 10th December 1997, lot 9.
