Rare 18th Century Hanoverian Liberty Anti Jacobite Wine Glass C1750

£1,950    $2,633    €2,293
Technical Description

A rare Hanoverian or anti-Jacobite wine glass dating to circa 1750. It features a round funnel bowl engraved with the word LIBERTY above a horse. To the reverse is a Jacobite rose with a single bud and a budless thorny stem. It stands on a multi-spiral air twist stem with two swelling knops, above a conical foot.

Historical Context

Hanoverian wine glasses were produced in the mid-18th century as part of a culture of political drinking, allowing owners to express loyalty and take part in symbolic toasts during a time of division between Hanoverian and Jacobite supporters.

The engraving of LIBERTY and the horse represents support for the Hanoverian monarchy and the White Horse of Hanover. The Jacobite rose on the reverse refers to the Stuart cause, and its inclusion alongside Hanoverian symbols creates a deliberate contrast, reflecting political allegiance or commentary.
