Grandfather clocks, also known as longcase clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke around 1670, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrower cases.

Traditional longcase clocks were primarily constructed from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, walnut, and sometimes fruitwoods, featuring brass movements, dials, weights, and lead or iron pendulums.

Authentic pieces are identified by hand-cut brass gears, engraved maker signatures on the dial plates, period-appropriate timber shrinkage, and traditional joinery methods rather than modern fixings.

A grandfather clock serves as a striking architectural anchor in contemporary spaces; position it against a neutral wall in an entrance hall or living room to contrast clean modern lines with traditional craftsmanship.

Keep the clock away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber cracking, ensure it is professionally serviced every few years, and maintain it on a stable, level floor for accurate timekeeping.
