A Fine Quality Bracket / Mantel / Wall Clock by James Ritchie of Edinburgh

19th century
Description

A high quality 8 day mahogany and brass inlaid bracket clock, by James Ritchie & Son, Edinburgh c.1837 ( William IV) striking the hours on a single bell with additional alarm feature. The clock also has a mahogany wall bracket so the clock can be wall mounted if desired.

The high quality case veneered in beautifully figured flame mahogany, inlaid with brass decoration to the front and to the canted side mouldings, terminating with brass capitals. The elegantly shaped sweeping pagoda style top with finely carved decoration to the centre. Cast brass silk lined fishscale frets to the sides. the brass inlaid moulded plinth terminating on four turned bun feet. A fine quality triple support mahogany wall bracket with fine quality carving.

The beautifully executed silvered and engraved brass dial of pagoda shape with roman numeral chapter ring, signed Jas Ritchie & Son Edinburgh. The whole dial surrounded by a silvered cast brass frame. Alarm setting aperture to the centre of the dial above the VI.

The fully restored high quality twin fusee movement of eight day duration, united by five knopped pillars, with the original anchor escapement and striking the hours on a single bell. Heavy engraved brass bob pendulum and knurled thumbscrew pendulum restraint. The alarm sounding on an additional single bell, operating when set to the desired time by a three armed rotating hammer.

Beautiful fretted blued steel hands of delicate trefoil design, with the additional central blued steel pointer hand for alarm setting facility.

An elegant, well proportioned original clock with a wonderfully figured mahogany case of excellent colour and patination.

All of our clock movements are restored by our horologist who works exclusively for us.

Our horologist is a Fellow of the British Horological Institute (FBHI), having 35 years of full time professional engagement in the repair & restoration of clocks, watches, music boxes & barometers. He was the recipient of the 1977 Worshipful Company of Clockmakers Bronze Medal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
