FAQs

Satsuma ware is a type of Japanese pottery originating from Satsuma Province in Kagoshima Prefecture. While its origins date to the late 16th century, the pieces most commonly collected today were produced during the late 19th century, particularly the Meiji period, for export to Western markets.

Satsuma pieces are traditionally characterised by an earthenware body covered with an ivory-coloured, crackled glaze known as kanyu. They are hand-painted using iron-ore pigments, enamels, and heavy gilt detailing to depict intricate figural scenes or natural motifs.

Authenticity is typically determined by examining the fineness of the crackle glaze, the precision and depth of the hand-painted enamels, and the presence of artist or kiln marks on the base, often written in gold overglaze or impressed into the clay.

Large antique vases serve as focal points when placed on sturdy sideboards, mantels, or pedestals, allowing their intricate patterns to stand out against neutral walls. They can be displayed on their own as sculptural objects or paired with minimalist decor to balance their ornate detailing.

Antique ceramics should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and kept out of direct sunlight to prevent the fading of delicate enamels and gilt. Water should not be placed inside porous earthenware vessels; instead, use them exclusively for dry display.
