Italian artisans cut engraved paper prints, pasted them onto painted timber or papier-mache substrates, and sealed them with translucent varnish layers to simulate eastern lacquer decorative techniques.

Traditional construction involves a prepared wooden or earthen form coated in opaque paint, such as cobalt blue or cream. Hand-coloured copperplate prints are carefully applied to the surface before receiving multiple resin varnish coats, which are cured and polished alongside gilt highlights.
