Imari porcelain refers to Japanese export ceramic wares produced around the town of Arita in the former Hizen Province. Named after the port of Imari from which it was shipped, this porcelain is distinguished by its vibrant palette of underglaze cobalt blue, overglaze iron-red enamel, and gilded highlights.

Imari porcelain is constructed from fine kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to produce a dense, vitreous body. Artisans painted designs using cobalt blue oxide prior to the initial glaze firing, after which polychrome enamels and gold leaf were applied over the glaze and fired a second time in a lower-temperature kiln.
