1900 - 1920
For Sale by Chalfont Clocks
Description

A very Stylish Onyx and Chrome Clock and Garniture is the epitome of Art Deco. This mantel clock, with an unusual pendulum, has an eight day Pendule de Paris movement striking on a bell. The case and flanking vases are made of a striking combination of polished onyx and black marble, with chrome plated hexagonal columns with polished brass based and capitals. The clock movement is housed in a four glass case with bevelled glass sided and doors. The diamond shaped dial has a gilded chapter ring with stylish Arabic numerals around a silver centre with chrome plated hands.

Crowning this clock is the sculptural top depicting a German Shepherd dog cast in bronze and chrome plated, this is by the renowned animal sculptor, Michel Decoux the back of the tail stamped ‘bronze’, His sculptures are collectable in their own rite.

Michel Decoux born in Belgian but worked mainly in Paris, was regarded as an animal sculptor though he occasionally sculpted people. He was best known for making groups of hunting scenes, and specialized in wild animals (elephants, panthers, etc.). Influenced by cubism and part of the art deco movement, he liked to work in bronze. He is listed in Hachet – Dictionnaire illustre des sculpteurs animaliers.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Art Deco clock garniture is a three-piece decorative mantel set originating in the 1920s and 1930s, consisting of a central timepiece flanked by two matching side urns or vases designed to create a symmetrical display.

These sets frequently incorporate contrasting materials such as polished green or white onyx, variegated marble, chrome-plated metal, bevelled glass, and patinated metal or spelter animal sculptures.

Authentic pieces exhibit geometric shapes, stepped bases, clean sans-serif or diamond-shaped dials, original mechanical movements, and period-appropriate metal or stone craftsmanship.

Place the central clock on a fireplace mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard, positioning the matching garniture urns symmetrically on either side to frame the focal point.

Dust stone surfaces with a soft dry cloth and avoid acid-based cleaners that etch marble or onyx, while gently polishing chrome components with a dry microfibre cloth to prevent tarnish and fingerprint buildup.
