Green and Gold Lacquered Striking Bracket Clock - Chater & Son - London

18th century

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in seventeenth and eighteenth-century England, bracket clocks are spring-driven portable table clocks housed in decorative timber cases designed to rest on a wall bracket, mantelpiece, or sideboard.

Cases were typically crafted from hardwoods such as oak or fruitwood, finished with hand-applied lacquer or japanning techniques, and adorned with brass dials, spandrels, carrying handles, and internal steel clockwork.

Authentic period examples often feature brass dials with cast spandrels, hand-engraved maker signatures, fusee movements, period-appropriate lacquer wear, and crown or anchor escapement mechanisms.

Positioning a lacquered clock on a contemporary sideboard, mantelpiece, or library bookshelf creates a refined focal point, contrasting traditional craftsmanship against clean architectural surfaces.

Position the case away from direct sunlight, heating radiators, and dampness, dusting gently with a soft dry microfibre cloth while avoiding chemical polishes that could dissolve historical japanning layers.
