Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French longcase clocks from the 19th century often drew inspiration from earlier Rococo and Neoclassical periods, combining curvilinear cabinet forms with intricate metalwork. These clocks frequently incorporated gilt-bronze mounts and parquetry veneer work to create structural focal pieces for formal reception rooms.

Cabinetmakers commonly used hardwood veneers, such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood, arranged over solid wood carcasses. Decorative elements relied heavily on cast and chased gilt bronze, known as ormolu, alongside enamel dial plates and brass clockwork components.

Authentic pieces display hand-chased bronzework with visible casting seams or hand-cut threads on mount fixings, along with natural age wear on internal wood surfaces. Examining the movement for maker signatures, correct pendulum escape mechanisms, and historic movement plates provides further verification.

Positioning a tallcase clock in a spacious hallway, stair landing, or formal room creates a vertical anchor point. Pairing rich wood tones with neutral wall palettes allows the metalwork and detailed graining to contrast cleanly without overwhelming modern architectural lines.

The wooden cabinet should be kept away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer shrinkage or fading. Ormolu mounts require gentle dusting with a soft dry brush rather than abrasive chemical polishes, while the internal clockwork should be serviced periodically by a qualified horologist.
