Description

? An early C18th exotic timber table cabinet, the caddy top with lift up lid, above a pair of radially veneered doors with bronze mounts, enclosing an arrangement of drawers with central door and further drawers. With original key. All raised on turned bun feet. Circa 1720, probably Antwerp. The timber most likely from the rosewood family and has faded to wonderful mellow surface and patina.

A Flemish table cabinet is a compact wooden storage piece produced in the Low Countries during the 18th century. Designed to sit atop a table, desk, or sideboard, these cabinets were used to secure documents, coins, jewellery, and small valuables.

These cabinets were primarily constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak or walnut. Construction methods featured hand-cut dovetail joints, peg construction, turned wood feet, hand-moulded geometric panelling, and hand-forged iron or brass mountings.

Authentic pieces display signs of period craftsmanship, including hand-sawn timber marks, uneven hand-cut dovetails, original pegging, and natural oxidation inside the drawers. Geometric raised door mouldings and original metal lock escutcheons are also characteristic of the era.
