Rare Minute Repeater Carriage Clock by Margaine

19th century
Description

Hi

I have for sale an a1880s French striking and repeating Grand sonnerie minute repeating carriage clock made in France by the makers Margaine which is signed by them on the back plate of the movement, the clock case has the original gilding, the movement was restored by the late Peter Bonnett fully restored with new springs added and is running strong keeping time and striking correctly with the repeat button on the top all running via the original again restored silvered platform.

Peter told me there are only 5 known examples of this clock and only two had the blue dial, I took the clock to antiques road show 25 years ago and it was valued at the time by Richard Price at 22-25k but that was a long time ago.

The Case

The case is in solid shiny gilded brass and stands 20cm high x 10cm wide with a depth of 8cm it is in original condition with a thick 5mm beveled front/back door and top viewing glass again all in mint condition.

The case is very shiny and hard to photograph they do not do the clock justice at all.

At the base is the lever for silent or quarters or grand Sonnerie all working correctly.

The Dial

The dial is in mint original condition in cobalt blue porcelain with Arabic numerals; the clock also retains its original very fine gilt spade hands.

At the bottom is another blue dial for the alarm again in mint condition.

The Movement

The movement is an eight-day time and strike which strikes the hours, quarters and halves, and three quarters via two blue steel gongs to the rear also has the repeater button on top to repeat the last hour strike, the movement has been fully restored, and running and striking 100% correctly.

Plus minute repeating via the repeat button only.

You will never see another for sale.

This clock also has a fully functional alarm.

The clock also contains Genre stop work to stop over winding a top-quality feature only found on top-end clocks.

At the bottom of the case is a lever for full striking or just hour striking or Silent so you have all three options.

The photos do not do justice to this lovely old clock.

As with all my clocks, this one is sold with a ‘back-to-base’ 3-month guarantee. I also offer future clock servicing, which I carry out personally at a heavily discounted rate.
