Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was named after the port of Imari from which it was exported to Europe during the 17th to 19th centuries. European aristocrats prized these items for their complex hand-painted decoration, featuring underglaze cobalt blue combined with overglaze iron red and gilded embellishments.

Traditional Imari ceramics were crafted from fine kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to form durable porcelain. Artisans applied cobalt blue decoration before the initial glaze firing, followed by detailed overglaze painting using iron-red enamels and gold leaf highlights in subsequent low-temperature firings.

Authentic 19th-century Imari pieces display a dense colour palette composed of cobalt blue, iron red, and gilt details. Inspection reveals minor hand-painted variations, subtle irregularities in the glaze, and slight wear to the gilded areas, along with a distinct weight characteristic of high-fired antique porcelain.
