This is a charming antique rustic French food cupboard, comprising a single door, with a finely carved exterior, circa 1830, in good original condition. With a provincial design, the French cupboard is heavily carved in earlier 17th and 18th designs, including sequential foliate and floral carved stiles and rails, incorporating lunette carvings within a zig-zag and acanthus leaf design, with inset panels to the sides of the cupboard. The single door is decorated with a pierced fan-shape panel and retains its original steel working lever lock, with original working key and original hinges. The door opens to reveal three original pine shelves, with plenty of useful storage space. The base of the food cupboard is decorated with a scroll shaped frieze, featuring a carved cartouche, terminating on cabriole feet. The French food cupboard is constructed in the traditional manner with mortice and tenon joints, secured by dowel pegs, featuring its original backboards and floor.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An antique French food cupboard, historically known as a panetiere or lardiniere, was designed in regional France to store bread and food items securely while permitting air circulation through carved grilles or slats.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from regional European hardwoods such as chestnut, oak, and walnut, often secured with hand-forged iron or steel escutcheons and hinges.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-chiseled joinery, age-appropriate timber shrinkage, hand-carved floral or rosette motifs, and original ventilated grilles designed for domestic food preservation.

A carved timber food cupboard functions effectively as a freestanding linen cabinet, hallway storage piece, or pantry accent in both modern rustic and traditional interior schemes.

Dust the detailed carvings regularly with a soft dry brush and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically to maintain the timber finish and protect against environmental drying.
