This late Victorian biscuit barrel dates from 1910 in the English Country House style. The piece combines clear cut glass with silver-plated mounts, creating a striking contrast between the transparent vessel and the metallic hardware. The cylindrical clear body features an intricate cut star motif at the base alongside intersecting diagonal incisions. A polished silver-plated collar encircles the upper rim, supporting a tall overhead arch handle and an automated hinged lid mechanism with small spherical finials. The hardware includes side hinges and a pivoting lever system that connects the handle movement to the lid. The overall dimensions measure 28.6 cm high, 14.6 cm wide, and 14.6 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this biscuit barrel suits placement on a sideboard top in a dining room or living space. The functional mechanical design allows the lid to open automatically when the tall arch handle is pushed downward, offering both visual interest and practical storage for biscuits or small treats. The silver and clear colour palette coordinates easily with traditional tableware collections and antique serving accessories.

Popularised in the late nineteenth century, an automated biscuit barrel features a mechanical linkage system where moving the handle automatically opens or closes the lid.

These items typically combine hand-cut lead glass containers with silver-plated or solid sterling silver rims, handles, and mechanical lids.

Authentic pieces often display makers marks or electroplate hallmarks along the silver rim or lid mechanism, alongside period-appropriate glass hand-cutting techniques.

Position the vessel on a sideboard, drinks trolley, or kitchen island as a functional storage canister or a reflective decorative accent.

Hand-wash the glass body with warm soapy water while cleaning the silver-plated mounts gently with a specialised silver polishing cloth to avoid stripping the electroplating.
