FAQs

The tantalus was invented in the 19th century as a locking device to secure expensive spirits from household staff and guests, named after the Greek mythological figure Tantalus who was forever taunted by water just out of reach.

They were typically crafted from dense hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, and fitted with robust brass or plated locking mechanisms, holding crystal or cut-glass decanters.

Authentic pieces usually feature heavy solid timber construction, hand-cut crystal decanters with matching stoppers, and functional working locks with original keys or maker stamps on the hardware.

It serves as a striking focal point on a home bar, sideboard, or drinks trolley, blending historical craftsmanship with functional styling for entertaining.

Clean the wood with a soft, dry cloth and occasionally nourish it with appropriate beeswax, while washing the crystal decanters by hand with warm, soapy water and avoiding harsh chemicals on the metal fittings.
