Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the late 17th century following the invention of the anchor escapement by Robert Hooke, which allowed for longer pendulums and narrow cases.

They are traditionally constructed from solid timbers such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, housing brass mechanical movements driven by weights suspended on cords or chains.

Authenticity is assessed by examining the integration of the movement with the dial, hand-cut brass gears, signs of age-related wear on the wood, and original cabinet construction methods.

An antique longcase clock acts as a striking focal point when positioned in an empty hallway or living area, contrasting traditional craftsmanship with contemporary minimalist decor.

They require placement away from direct sunlight and heat sources, regular professional servicing of the mechanical movement, and careful handling when winding.
