Description

A fine quality mahogany 8 day longcase clock by James Love of edinburgh, circa 1785.

The beautifully proportioned flame mahogany veneered case of typical Edinburgh design with boxwood shell inlay to the trunk door flanked by reeded quarter columns. The similarly inlaid canted corner figured base with a raised single moulding and shaped bracket feet. The swan-neck pediment hood with ornate brass paterae and three cast brass finials, beneath fretted "Edinburgh panels". The glazed hood door flanked by turned and reeded wooden columns terminating with brass capitals, corresponding half turned columns to the rear of the hood with wooden capitals and glazed movement viewing windows.

The original lock and brass hinges to the trunk door.

An elegant case in fine original condition with excellent quality veneers of good colour and patination.

The arched painted dial finely executed with bold Roman numerals and an outer minute track with Arabic numerals to the quarters and diamond markings.

The dial corners beautifully decorated with brightly coloured flowers with gold leaf border.

The arch with gilded painted wheat sheaf inscribed in Latin "Deus Munificus" and flanked by garlands of flowers.

Subsidiary date and seconds zone to the dial centre, signed to the centre James Love Edinburgh.

The high quality movement is of eight day duration, the plates united by four knopped pillars, anchor escapement and striking the hours on a single bell.

The movement is fully restored by our horologist who works exclusively for us.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
