The clock movement is held aloft in a gilded drum by 4 white marble pillars with floral swags between. The ormolu pendulum is visible swinging below. Between the pillars is a charming figure of Cupid, carrying his torch to light the flame of love. To the top is a pair of love birds with a flaming torché and a quiver of arrows, seated amongst a swag of roses. The swags and love birds are a darker colour, contrasting nicely with the ormolu and the white marble. The candelabra are conforming in style with three lights and arms modelled as ornate foliage with mythical creatures.
The dial is enamel on copper with delicate floral swags between the numerals and finely fretted gilt brass hands. The bezel is fitted with convex glass.
The French movement is by A. D. Mougin and is of high quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. The ormolu Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!
Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The marble has discoloured in places to a mellow off-white and there are some nibbles to the edges and a knocked corner to the left hand side rear of the base of the clock. The dial is also in excellent condition with no chips or scratches, just some very slight fading to the lettering. The set makes a stunning display as you can see below.
