This Anglo-Indian table lamp originates from the 1920s and functions as a decorative lighting piece for a gentleman's library or sideboard top. The lamp is constructed from lacquered wood with a brass bulb socket and shows hand-painted floral motifs in gold and red over a dark multi-coloured base. The body includes an open twist stem, a turned column, and a circular moulded base with intact paintwork. Measuring Height: 31cm, Width: 10cm, Depth: 10cm, the lamp has been newly rewired and remains in very good condition with the original finish preserved. It sits suitably on a side table or cabinet surface to provide layered accent lighting within a traditional interior space.

Originating in the Kashmir region of northern India, these lighting pieces were produced primarily for the export market during the British Colonial era. Artisans adapted traditional lacquerware and papier-mache decorative techniques to Western electrical lighting fixtures, creating distinctive table lamps throughout the 1920s.

These lamps are constructed using a core of turned wood or layered papier-mache, which is coated in multiple layers of lacquer. Artisans painted detailed floral patterns using vegetable dyes and gold leaf pigments before finishing with a protective clear varnish and fitting brass electrical components.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-painted foliage or floral motifs, often showing gentle natural wear to the gold leaf gilding. Look for traditional motifs such as the chinar leaf or paisley, alongside historical brass lamp holders and signs of traditional hand-carved joinery.

Place the lamp on a dark wood sideboard, desk, or side table to highlight its polychrome lacquered finish. Pair it with a neutral silk or pleated linen lampshade to balance the detailed pattern of the base without overwhelming the room scheme.

Dust gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft-bristled brush to clean intricate carved areas. Avoid using liquid cleaners, solvents, or water, as moisture can damage the historical lacquer finish and gold leaf detail.
