This nineteenth-century Anglo-Indian table lamp stands as a striking example of Kashmiri decorative woodcraft, taking the form of a slender turned wooden column with a stepped circular base. The piece is finished in a warm ochre yellow lacquer, detailed with intricate hand-painted floral motifs in soft green, white, and dark tones, complemented by visible surface wear that reveals its age. At the top sits a patinated brass light fitting with a multi-tiered socket and adjustment screw. The lamp measures 42 cm high, making it a compact addition to interior schemes. Placed upon a sideboard top, this lamp suits eclectic Glastonbury Boho and traditional spaces alike, adding character and warmth to a living room, hallway, or study. The turned baluster stem incorporates repeating bulbous sections and fine ridged mouldings that catch the light, while the flared circular foot provides a stable foundation on wooden furniture. Its cheerful yellow palette and folk-art floral patterns bring a vibrant yet gentle touch of historic craft into modern domestic settings, serving as both a functional lighting source and a decorative sculptural object.

Kashmiri lacquerware and hand-painted wooden lighting originate from Northern India, where artisans crafted items using turned wood or papier-mache adorned with intricate floral motifs influenced by Persian trade routes.

These lamp bases were typically hand-turned from regional hardwoods or moulded papier-mache, decorated with natural mineral pigments, and sealed with layers of protective clear lacquer.

Authentic period pieces display fine surface craquelure within the varnish, subtle variations in hand-painted brushwork, and historical wear around the raised turned sections and electrical fittings.

Position the lamp base on a neutral sideboard or side table, pairing it with a simple drum shade in cream linen to draw focus to the hand-painted pattern.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a dry microfibre cloth, keeping the item away from direct sunlight, and avoiding liquid solvents or waxes that can damage the original painted lacquer.
