This mid-Victorian open bookcase dates to around 1850 and is formed of two dark brown mahogany sections. The structure features a classical moulded cornice above a simple beaded frieze, with the double bays flanked and divided by plain vertical pilasters. Five adjustable shelves sit within each bay, stocked with books, all resting on a solid moulded plinth base. Visible details include straight upright timber divisions, uniform book spines arranged neatly across multiple tiers, and straight linear mouldings along the top and bottom borders. Measuring 209 cm high, 182 cm wide and 42 cm deep, this tall storage unit fits suitably into a study, home office, or living room. It provides generous open shelving for books and display items in either a contemporary or a traditional residential interior.

Mid-Victorian open bookcases are defined by solid construction, substantial proportions, and classical detailing such as projecting cornices and plinth bases. Unlike earlier delicate designs, pieces from this period emphasise rich timbers like mahogany and walnut, constructed without glass doors to allow direct access to library collections.

Cabinetmakers during the 19th century primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, and walnut for visible frames. Secondary timbers including pine or deal were frequently used for rear backings and internal shelf cores, often finished with mahogany veneers on exposed edges.

Authentic Victorian examples often feature hand-sawn secondary timber on the reverse, hand-cut dovetail joinery, and period shelf support mechanisms like wooden sawtooth strips or brass stud inserts. Original patination shows wear around shelf heights, alongside age-related oxidisation on the underside and back panels.

Open bookcases are styled by pairing curated rows of bound volumes with decorative objects, such as ceramics, small framed artworks, and sculpted stone pieces. Positioning a dark mahogany piece against neutral or deeply saturated wall tones creates a focal anchor within studies or living areas.

Preserving mahogany involves regular dusting with a soft microfibre cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice annually. Furniture should be kept away from direct heat sources and radiator vents to prevent wood shrinkage, movement, or finish deterioration.
