Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian open bookcases are defined by solid wood construction, often mahogany or oak, featuring unglazed shelving for easy access to volumes. They typically incorporate architectural elements such as plinth bases, moulded cornices, and fluted side pilasters.

19th-century bookcases were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak, with secondary timbers like pine or deal used for backboards and drawer linings. Hand-cut dovetail joints and adjustable wooden shelf pegs were standard features.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of age such as hand-planed secondary surfaces, original peg-and-hole shelf adjustment systems, and natural oxidation on the wood undersides. The finish typically displays uneven patina and slight shrinkage marks around joinery appropriate to its age.

A low open bookcase can be placed along a hallway or living room wall, serving as both storage for books and a display surface for ceramics, framed art, or table lamps. Mixing contemporary decorative objects with traditional dark timber creates visual contrast within a modern scheme.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timbers natural luster. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent drying, warping, or uneven fading of the finish.
