This tall Victorian open bookcase dates from 1870 and is made from solid mahogany with a warm brown finish. The grand freestanding piece stands 209 cm high, 100 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, and incorporates a projected moulded cornice, carved corbels at the upper corners, six tiers of adjustable shelves, and a solid plinth base. Rows of antique books with patterned spines fill multiple shelves throughout the interior. Position this substantial furniture piece in a study, home library, or formal living room to house a book collection and provide grand architectural presence. The natural timber grain and traditional joinery suit both period interiors and classic contemporary home workspaces.

Victorian open bookcases typically feature dark hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, classical architectural mouldings, carved corbels, and exposed adjustable shelving systems designed for private libraries.

Cabinetmakers predominantly utilised solid mahogany, oak, or walnut, often incorporating secondary woods like pine or poplar for interior backings, alongside wooden peg or metal sawtooth shelf adjusters.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved decorative details, hand-cut dovetail joints or hand-planed back panels, natural patina on the finish, and period-correct shelf support systems.

Position the piece as a focal point in a study or living room, balancing traditional leather-bound volumes with modern ceramics, framed art, and curated decorative objects.

Clean the surface regularly with a soft cotton cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish and prevent moisture loss.
