Victorian Pub Sherry Decanter C1890

19th century
Description

This fascinating VICTORIAN PUB SHERRY DECANTER advertises ‘SHERRY 1/- PER GLASS’. The letters are cut into the glass and then painted or gilded.

It is wondrous to think that prices remained so stable that Pubs were prepared to buy such Decanters.

A rare survivor symbolising the heyday of the Victorian Pub.

The stopper, which has small chips to the base, fits well in the Decanter and is of the same period but we cannot guarantee it is the original.

Overall Height: 12.5 inches (32 cm)

Express delivery within the UK is included. Please email for our current Overseas Shipping charges.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Wheel-cut lettering with rubbed gilding: late 19th-century barware.
Star-cut base covering the pontil mark: standard late Victorian practice.
Ground stopper shank and neck: traditional glass-to-glass fit.
Circular friction marks around the underside rim: decades of standing on counter tops.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

During the late 19th century, British public houses utilized dedicated commercial decanters displayed behind the bar to store and serve popular spirits and fortified wines. These vessels often featured clear gilded or etched script indicating both the contents and the price per glass to assist bar staff and inform patrons.

Victorian decanters were primarily manufactured from blown or moulded lead crystal glass. Decorative features included hand-cut geometric patterns, ground-in stoppers for airtight seals, and hand-applied gold leaf or enamel lettering.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-accurate hand-gilding or acid etching, evidence of wear on the base from commercial counter use, and minor inclusions or pontil marks within the glass. Ground stoppers are often numbered to match the specific decanter neck.

Antique barware is frequently styled on drinks trolleys, sideboards, or within glass-fronted cabinets. Arranging decanters of varying heights alongside brass trays or vintage glassware creates a focal point in dining rooms or living spaces.

Avoid dishwashers and harsh chemical cleaners, as these dissolve gold leaf gilding. Wash the interior gently with lukewarm water and mild soap, ensuring water does not rub vigorously against external gilded lettering.
