Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This tall 1860 English Country House bookcase stands in painted oak and pine, finished in an olive green tone with a pale off-white interior. The upper section contains double glazed doors with square astragal bars and multiple interior shelves, while the lower section has panelled cupboard doors fitted with a small brass keyhole escutcheon. A strong moulded cornice crowns the top, and the piece rests solidly on a simple plinth base. Measuring 122 cm high, 144.5 cm wide, and 43 cm deep with a shelf depth of 25 cm, it offers substantial storage capacity. In a contemporary home, this traditional cupboard works well in a study, library, or living room to house books, displaying decorative objects in the upper glazed section while keeping less attractive items hidden within the lower panelled cupboards. The classic proportions and muted colour palette suit neutral, rustic, or traditional interior schemes.

FAQs

Originating primarily in the 18th and 19th centuries, these bookcases feature glazed upper doors for storing and displaying books, resting on a solid cupboard base. Painted finishes were traditionally applied to softwoods like pine to protect the timber and suit specific decorative schemes.

Craftsmen typically utilised pine or oak framing with hand-cut joinery, hand-blown glass panes secured by wooden glazing bars, and panelled lower doors. Finishes often consisted of milk paint or distemper over a prepared base layer.

Genuine period examples display natural age wear on high-contact edges, original brass fittings, and hand-planed backboards visible from the rear. The interior painted surfaces often show historic layering compared to modern repainted finishes.

A tall painted bookcase serves as an ideal anchor piece in a dining room, living area, or study. The light-toned interior creates contrast, highlighting curated ceramics, glassware, or books alongside modern furnishings.

Maintain the painted surface by dusting gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or liquid polish. Keep the piece clear of direct heat sources and moisture to prevent wood movement and paint flaking.
