An Edwardian sterling silver butterfly brooch designed in the distinctive style of Charles Horner, dating from the 1900s. The openwork metal wings display decorative filigree silver wirework set with paste diamond stones, while the insect head includes red paste gem eyes and a central square-cut paste stone. A carved mother-of-pearl body sits between the wings, accompanied by an articulated blister pearl drop suspended from the lower edge. The reverse holds a functional pin secured by a simple C-clasp, alongside engraved maker marks and the word Sterling. Measuring 3.5 cm high by 4 cm wide and 1 cm deep, this small accessory offers practical versatility for everyday styling. The piece attaches securely to lapels, scarves, collars or hats, bringing a touch of antique craftsmanship to contemporary outfits or adding character to a curated collection of period costume jewellery displayed on a dressing table tray.

Edwardian butterfly jewellery from the early 20th century is characterised by delicate metalwork, naturalistic insect motifs, and the combination of silver or gold with pearls and paste stones.

Craftsmen typically utilised sterling silver or gold settings combined with seed pearls, baroque pearls, paste crystals, and occasionally enamel detailing.

Genuine pieces feature specific hallmark stamps, such as the CH makers mark alongside Chester silver hallmarks, tube hinges, and traditional C-clasps.

Antique brooches can be displayed on velvet-lined jewellery trays, presented inside framed shadow boxes as decorative wall art, or pinned to velvet cushions.

Clean silver elements carefully with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding chemical cleaners or submersion in liquid, which can cause permanent damage to soft organic pearls and foil-backed paste stones.
