During the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, jewellery designers drew heavy inspiration from the natural world, producing detailed depictions of insects, arachnids, and reptiles. These pieces symbolised curiosity and fascination with biology, crafted using precious metals and natural gemstones.

Edwardian insect brooches were typically crafted from sterling silver or gold, often set with cabochon stones such as moonstone, garnet, or opal. The settings frequently featured hand-chased metalwork and secure pin mechanisms standard for early twentieth-century metalwork.

Authentic pieces from this period often display specific hallmarks, C-clasp or long tube-joint pin closures, and hand-cut stones with closed-back or claw settings. Metal oxidation patterns and fine hand-finishing details on the underside also indicate period construction.

A statement insect pin can be fastened to a tailored jacket lapel, attached to a silk scarf, or positioned near the collar of a buttoned shirt. Placing smaller brooches on winter coats or structured hats provides an accent to contemporary tailoring.

Silver components should be gently wiped with a soft jewellery polishing cloth, avoiding liquid dips that can loosen stone settings or alter patination. Moonstones require careful handling with a soft cloth and mild soapy water, avoiding chemical solvents and ultrasonic cleaners.
