Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large early 20th-century apothecary carboy originates from the Edwardian period. The hand-blown glass vessel displays a teardrop silhouette, an elongated neck, a pedestal foot, and a ground glass stopper, and is filled with a crimson red liquid. The transparent glass body reveals a smooth finish, a teardrop-shaped finial on the stopper, and a moulded circular base. Standing at 80 cm high, the piece occupies a substantial footprint suitable for display. In a contemporary home setting, this carboy serves as a decorative accent placed on a sideboard top within a gentleman's library or study. The traditional chemist shop window display vessel brings period character to an interior through its vibrant colouration and distinctive apothecary design. The sealed glass container remains intact with its original coloured contents and retains the original stopper positioned securely in the neck.

FAQs

An apothecary carboy, also known as a show globe, is a large glass vessel traditionally filled with coloured liquids and displayed in pharmacy shopfronts from the 17th to early 20th centuries to signify the chemist trade.

These vessels were hand-blown from clear soda-lime glass, featuring teardrop or bulbous silhouettes with elongated necks and precision ground-glass stoppers designed to minimise fluid evaporation.

Authentic pieces often exhibit pontil scars or hand-finished bases, subtle air bubbles trapped within the glass matrix, and hand-ground glass stoppers that fit specific vessel necks.

Positioning an apothecary carboy on a sideboard top or deep window sill allows natural sunlight to refract through the translucent liquid, creating a vibrant focal point in a study or living area.

Clean the exterior glass surface using warm water and a soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals, and periodically replace interior fluid using distilled water mixed with lightfast dyes.
