Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1930s:
Rotary-cut plywood backboards: cabinet work from the 1920s and 1930s.
Slotted brass shelf strips: adjustable support fittings common in early twentieth-century bookcases.
Single-slot brass screws on hinges and fittings: made before cross-head screws appeared.
Straight geometric glazing bars: understated design favoured in interwar furniture.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This Victorian style mahogany bookcase originates from 1930 and displays a warm brown finish across its solid timber surfaces. The upper section comprises twin glazed doors divided by wooden glazing bars into six individual glass panes each, enclosed beneath a stepped, moulded cornice. The lower cabinet features two panelled cupboard doors with vertical wooden stiles, and the entire assembly rests upon a solid plinth base at the floor level. Brass hardware includes slim barrel locks positioned centrally on both the upper and lower doors. Measuring 216 cm high, 127 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, this tall storage unit suits placement in a study, library, or home office to house books, display collections, and store household items behind enclosed lower doors.

Glazed bookcases gained immense popularity during the 19th century as private libraries expanded in Victorian homes. Crafted predominantly from rich woods such as mahogany, these cabinets combined open visibility for valued volumes with lower enclosed storage for papers and household items.

Traditional glazed bookcases were constructed using solid mahogany or mahogany veneers over pine or oak frames. Features typically include hand-fitted glass panes with wood astragal glazing bars, mortise and tenon joinery, recessed door panels, and brass locks.

Authentic period pieces display evidence of hand-tooling, such as hand-cut dovetail joints on drawers, irregular thickness in original float glass panes, natural patination on mahogany surfaces, and original brass hardware or lock plates.

A classic mahogany glazed bookcase can be styled alongside modern soft furnishings to create textural contrast. Designers often arrange curated ceramics, art books, and decorative objects inside the illuminated upper display while using the lower cabinet to conceal modern media equipment.

To preserve timber finishes, apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually with a soft cloth, rubbing along the grain. Keep the cabinet positioned away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent wood warping, veneer lifting, or finish fading.
