Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early 20th century Chinoiserie bedside table is a small wooden cupboard finished with red lacquer and painted ebonised sides and top. The exterior displays a butterfly and floral pattern, accompanied by a single drawer positioned above double cupboard doors secured with brass hardware, including faceplates and a Chinese closing pin. Additional visual elements comprise a hanging tassel on a string, slender rectangular side pillars, and a flat top surface. Measuring 60 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 32 cm deep, this cabinet serves as a bedside table in a home. The compact footprint and enclosed storage compartment make it suitable for keeping nighttime essentials organized beside a bed.

FAQs

Chinoiserie furniture represents a Western decorative style inspired by Chinese art and design traditions, popularised in Europe during the 18th century and revived in the early 20th century. These pieces typically feature lacquer work, gilded or hand-painted motifs such as butterflies, flora, and landscapes, set against bold background colours like red, black, or blue.

Traditional Chinoiserie cabinets are constructed from timber frames finished with multiple layers of lacquer or hand-applied paintwork. Decorative elements are painted using pigments or metallic leaf, and the cabinets are fitted with hand-formed brass hardware, including central latch plates and ring handles.

Authentic early 20th-century pieces display age-consistent surface wear, faint craquelure within the paint layer, and hand-fitted joinery. The metal fittings generally exhibit oxidisation, natural patina, and subtle manufacturing irregularities standard to hand-finished period hardware.

A red Chinoiserie cabinet serves as a focal point in modern spaces, providing colour and pattern against contemporary neutral backdrops. It functions efficiently as an accent nightstand in a bedroom, a side table beside living room seating, or a compact storage unit in an entrance hallway.

To maintain painted lacquer furniture, dust the surface regularly using a soft, clean microfibre cloth. Keep the cabinet away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity to prevent wood movement, peeling paint, or fading pigments, and avoid applying harsh liquid polishes or solvent cleaners.
