Brass corner brackets fixed with slotted screws: standard naval campaign construction.
Heavy iron drop handles on side plates: made for sea transport.
Dense straight grain on solid boards: typical of teak marine furniture.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This nineteenth-century Victorian maritime seaman's trunk brings historical character to any interior, functioning as a practical storage chest or an accent table in a living room, bedroom, or study. Constructed from warm brown teak, the piece displays a rich timber grain complemented by polished brass hardware. Visible details include reinforced brass corner mounts on the lid, exposed dovetail joints at the corners, a central flush latch fitting on the front, and a sturdy moulded base. The wood exhibits gentle signs of age and natural wear consistent with authentic period use. Measuring 96 cm long by 43 cm deep by 40 cm tall, the trunk offers substantial internal capacity while maintaining a compact footprint suitable for modern home placement.

A sea mans trunk or sea chest is a heavy-duty wooden container designed historically for sailors and naval officers to store personal possessions while onboard a vessel.

These trunks were constructed from durable, moisture-resistant timbers like teak or camphor wood and were fitted with dovetail joinery and brass corner mounts for extra structural strength.

Authentic pieces feature recessed or flush brass fittings designed to prevent snagging on ship interiors, exposed dovetail joint construction, and signs of natural surface wear and metal oxidisation.

A sea chest can function as a central coffee table in a living room, placed at the foot of a bed for linen storage, or positioned as an accent piece in a study or entrance hall.

To maintain the wood, apply clear beeswax polish periodically along the timber grain, keep the chest away from direct heat sources, and wipe metal mounts gently with a dry lint-free cloth.
