This eighteenth century or earlier Chinese jar or vase is adapted as a table lamp in the Chinoiserie style. The piece has a blue and white porcelain base featuring hand-painted floral scroll motifs, foliage, lappeted borders, an unglazed base, and brass hardware, paired with a pleated red and gold-toned fabric shade decorated with floral patterns. The porcelain displays restoration work, and the shade has a warm reddish-orange hue with gold highlights. The lamp measures 42 cm high, 25 cm wide, and 25 cm deep, with the antique shade spanning 35 cm wide for scale. It is suited for placement on a sideboard top, accent table, or desk to add traditional illumination and an English Country House aesthetic to a living room, hallway, or study.

Chinese porcelain vases and jars have been converted into table lamps since the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, allowing Western interiors to integrate imported oriental ceramic craftsmanship into functional domestic lighting.

These lamps consist of a hard-paste porcelain body decorated with cobalt blue underglaze paint, fitted with brass or bronze electrical mountings and topped with a woven fabric lampshade.

Authentic examples feature hand-painted cobalt artwork under the glaze, subtle variations in the ceramic shape, mounting collars fitted to the jar neck, and age-consistent wear on the base rim.

A Chinese porcelain vase lamp can be positioned on a sideboard, console table, or bedside chest, where the patterned porcelain and fabric shade add colour and texture alongside contemporary furnishings.

Dust the porcelain base periodically with a dry microfibre cloth and gently brush the pleated shade, avoiding liquid cleaners that could enter surface glaze micro-cracks or tarnish metal components.
