This Georgian sterling silver cream jug originates from the eighteenth century. The silver vessel presents a baluster body ornamented with spiral wrythen fluting, a scalloped rim, and a slender double-scroll handle with a leaf-capped attachment. A raised pedestal foot supports the base, detailed with stamped London hallmarks, the maker's mark for Ann Smith and Nathaniel Appleton, a lion passant, and a date letter for 1773. The polished silver surface reflects natural light, displaying crisp fluting lines and clear, legible assay marks near the rim. The jug measures 10.5 cm in height and length, providing a compact serving container for cream at the table. Placed upon a sideboard top or dining table, it functions as a traditional serving piece in an English country house setting. The item suits daily use during formal afternoon tea services or functions as a decorative silver display piece on a sideboard.

Georgian silver cream jugs produced during the mid-to-late 18th century frequently feature raised pedestal bases, pear-shaped or baluster bodies, and intricate fluting or chasing. Influenced by Rococo and early Neoclassical tastes, these vessels were crafted for tea service and display stamped assay hallmarks indicating their origin and silver purity.

These jugs were hand-fashioned from sterling silver (925 purity standard). Silversmiths raised the main body from flat silver sheets using shaping hammers, added decorative fluting or embossing by chasing, cast separate components like handles and pedestal feet, and soldered them together before stamping official hallmarks.

Authentic London sterling silver from this era features a group of stamped hallmarks: the makers mark (initials of the silversmith), the leopards head town mark for London, the lion passant indicating sterling purity, and a specific date letter representing the year of manufacture.

A Georgian silver cream jug can be placed on a dining room sideboard, integrated into a curated bar cart arrangement, or displayed alongside period porcelain within a glass-fronted cabinet to add historical texture and metallic contrast to modern decor.

Clean silver using a soft cloth and a specialised, non-abrasive silver polish formulated to remove oxidisation without wearing away surface details. Wash gently in warm water with mild detergent, dry thoroughly, and store in low-humidity environments inside tarnish-resistant cloth bags.
