This seventeenth-century Jacobean oak six-plank coffer exhibits a dark brown timber colour with a rich finish and visible patina, showing an aged character on its rectangular surfaces. The piece features a hinged lid with moulded edges, original wire hinges, and a central hand-forged iron lockplate, alongside V-cut slab ends that extend downward to form integrated feet. Practical in scale, the coffer measures 46 cm high, 79 cm wide, and 38 cm deep. In a modern home, this compact storage item serves well in a hallway, bedroom, or living space as a traditional chest for linens, blankets, or everyday accessories. Its rustic farmhouse aesthetic brings historical charm to both period and contemporary interiors.

A six-plank coffer, also known as a boarded chest, is an early form of timber furniture constructed from six single boards of wood forming the front, back, top, bottom, and two sides.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid native hardwoods such as English oak, joined with wooden pegs or hand-forged iron nails, and fitted with forged iron hinges and lockplates.

Authentic pieces feature signs of early joinery, such as hand-hewn timber, irregular pit-saw marks, wooden dowel fixings, hand-forged ironwork, and naturally aged surface patination.

An antique coffer serves as functional storage in hallways, living rooms, or bedrooms, providing a contrasting textural element alongside contemporary minimalist or rustic decor schemes.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding placement near direct heat sources or damp environments.
