Rare Anglo Irish Cut Dram Glass C1790-1800

18th century
For Sale by Exhibit Antiques
Description

Description

A superb Anglo-Irish dram glass dating to c.1790-1800.

For its size, this glass displays an extraordinary variety of cutting techniques rarely encountered on any piece of table glass, let alone a small dram glass. The glass holds 30ml, so a single straight measure glass.

It has a round funnel bowl, the upper half decorated with a band of half-printie cuts above a band of tiny diamonds and a lower prism-cut border. The lower half is richly ornamented with diamond swags surrounded by prism cutting, the intervening spaces further filled with diamonds. The shoulders and stem are flute cut, with the lower section additionally decorated with notch cutting on the flute edges. It stands on a conical foot with a polished pontil, the underside of the foot rim also embellished with a band of fine notch cuts.

The quality of the hand-cut workmanship is exceptional throughout. The sheer complexity and precision of the decoration suggest a piece of the highest calibre. It is the first example of its type that we have encountered and may well have been produced as a special commission.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE GEORGIAN ERA:
Polished pontil mark on the base: blown by hand rather than machine pressed.
Sharp hand-cut diamonds and prism borders: wheel work typical of the late 18th century.
Notched flute cutting along the stem: detailed hand finishing before mechanisation.
Faint rubbing on the foot rim: honest wear from resting on hard surfaces.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

An Anglo-Irish dram glass is a small stemware vessel produced in Ireland or England during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, designed specifically for consuming spirits or liqueurs in small measures.

These glasses were typically crafted from heavy lead crystal, favoured for its clarity and high refractive index, which allowed craftspeople to cut intricate diamond and panel patterns into the surface.

Authentic Georgian pieces feature hand-cut diamond or facet patterns, slight weight variations, minor inclusions within the glass, and often display an unpolished or ground pontil mark underneath.

Displaying small cut glass items on a timber sideboard, a styled bar cart, or inside an illuminated cabinet adds a touch of period craftsmanship and light reflection to modern dining spaces.

Hand wash antique lead crystal individually in lukewarm water using mild detergent, avoiding sudden temperature variations and automatic dishwashers to prevent thermal shock and clouding.
